The Blessings of Liberty - An essay on EE democracy by -Carlus-

This institution, the Eternal Empire, in all its magnificance is not what meets the eye. it is not an alliance or guild in the purest sense, but a movement; an idea. And what they say about ideas is indeed true: ideas never die. But what is this "idea"? What do the concepts of "liberty", "democracy" and "freedom" actually mean? This essay shall explore the reasoning behind the ideology that is the Eternal Empire.

What is an alliance, really? It is far from the leader or the top echelons of alliance management who represent us on the galactic stage; it is the individual members at the bottom of the hierarchy who are at the core of an alliance. A leader is only a leader if they have followers to command, after all. The members are the ones who trade, fight wars, post on forums, chat, and so on that make the alliance function, and they are the ones who suffer for the incompetence of their officers.

However, what separates the characters of a leader from a follower are many virtues such as charisma, strength of will, initiative. Without these, a leader is no different from the led. In the end, a decision needs to be made and executed. Sometimes a snap decision is required in certain situations. The diplomatic backrooms for example. Obviously those with merit, the ones with the skills and abilities to lead must answer this call. An alliance requires order and structure to survive. for the potential leaders to be put to work, they may either be appointed, take office by force, or be elected. The first option, appointment, while simple and instant, has its disadvantages. The appointer has an arbitary power easily abused which may be used to appoint his or her favourites. The lack of transparency, checks & balances is detrimental to the alliance. If the leaders cannot trust their people, how can they expect their followers to trust them? A leader's job is public service. Should their intentions stray from this, it sets a dangerous precedent for future corrupt acts. The second option is to take office by force. Simply by the fact that they require force to gain power states their lack of charisma to sway their leaders or electorate, or experience to justify holding office. The third option, popular mandate, while slower, is ultimately the best option. At the core of the alliance are the members. So if a leader is selected by the masses, they trust in him or her to administrate the alliance with competence. Logically, members should choose the person who will put the alliance's human resources to the best possible and most efficient usage. Corruption is much harder to organise with this system in place simply due to the large numbers of selectors which a candidate must bribe or coerce. A less than full electorate does not fully represent the alliance or its members, and corruption is significantly easier. And who says that it is impossible for the person selecting the electorate to abuse their power?

Fact. No one knows more about you than you. It is a member's sacred duty to think for themselves and select a candidate in any election who will be best suited for the job. Whether you vote or not, someone is going to hold office and it might as well be someone competent and someone you trust to do look after your interests. but there is more to voting than just voting. One vote is much less than two votes, or three. Actively campaign for your candidate, convince people on the sidelines to support them. The same goes for any legislation going through parliament. Debate, talk, argue. Win that vote and make the alliance a better place for all to enjoy. The best part of each member thinking for themselves is that each member can add their own ideas to the melting pot. New innovative ideas can be applied, often quite easily, to old problems. Only by members being allowed to speak for themselves and to be encouraged to do so can an alliance take advantage of 50 minds, instead of a dictatorial, self obsessed single mind. In other words; freedom of expression; individualism, self-responsibility, liberty, the list goes on.

One source of confusion in the structure of the alliance is the Imperial theme. At the heart of an alliance, equal to democracy, is the culture of an alliance. Just as an alliance's members are individuals, alliances are individuals among each other. Our uniqueness, Eternal Exceptionalism(to use a term I just made up) exists to stand out among the many alliances, give us something to be proud of, attract new members to our way of life. And what actually is the title Emperor? Simply put, a title. A name. Our liberties will be there whether we call it Emperor, King, Prince, Xenu, and so on.

So have a think about what you've just read. Do you agree with it? Do you disagree with it? The important lesson in all of this is to think for yourself. You decide! Just remember the ideals that promote your right to speak and the document which protects it.

Thanks for reading,
